"I chose to major in Comparative Literature out of a love of literature and writing, but also because it seemed to offer insights into human beings and human interaction through the careful reading of their written works and their use of language, which I find thoroughly interesting. Reading a variety of works gives you a perspective on other cultures while also stimulating you to become a more versatile communicator/writer/thinker yourself."
- Erin Lytle,
Comparative Literature major
In a relatively small major at UC Davis such as Comparative Literature, you can work closely with faculty and enjoy seminar-style, discussion-oriented courses. With the extensive knowledge you will gain in a foreight language, study abroad will be an exciting and enriching opportunity.
If you enjoy reading books, exploring ideas and learning about other civilizations, you will find Comparative Literature a stimulating field of study. Comparative Literature allows students to combine courses in one or more foreign language and literature departments such as Spanish or Chinese with courses in Comparative Literature. The major offers a European Emphasis and an Asian Emphasis. Each requires three literature courses taught in the original language in addition to Comparative Literature courses. These courses allow students to take a broad view of a historical period, a theme or a genre. This permits great flexibility and allows you to discover the connections between literature and areas such as philosophy, film studies, psychology, history and the arts.
Careers directly related to Comparative Literature include teaching, journalism, publishing and translating. However, many other careers will also require the critical thinking and analytical skills. The knowledge you will gain through your understanding of foreign languages, beliefs, practices of various cultures, literary theory, careful analytical thinking, and expert communication and writing skills will be invaluable for any career. Comparative Literature provides valuable preparation for careers in business, government, and international affairs, to name a few. Since a literature major provides such a solid academic foundation, it is also excellent background for graduate and professional studies.
