What Matters to Gabriella Wong? Equality for those with disabilities.

I had to grow up really quickly. My parents are both deaf, and even when I was very young, they would ask me to interpret for them. As I grew up, I went with them to the doctor’s office, the bank, the store – anywhere they needed to communicate. They are both also immigrants from Asia, and although they had a good education, it was tough for them. When they arrived in the United States, they didn't have anyone to show them the ropes, much less someone who knew how to communicate with them.

During my time as a student at UC Davis, I have tried to help students who are deaf and hard of hearing, to help equalize the situation for them during their college years. I established an organization for those who are hearing impaired to socialize and discuss issues. I created a project where I, along with fellow volunteers, went to deaf and hard of hearing students in middle and high schools, communicating the opportunities that are before them if they go to a university and how to get over the hurdles they will face.

My whole life has revolved around my family. I’m so fortunate to have these wonderful parents who have inspired me to see how you can overcome anything. As I hand both the organization and the project off to new students to take them over, I will start graduate studies at Columbia University. I hope to move into public policy on behalf of people with disabilities, further creating equal opportunities for those who may not have a voice to do it themselves.

I am Gabriella Wong. This is what matters to me.
