8th Annual Davis Film Festival June 4-5 (May, 20 2008)

The Davis Varsity Theatre presents the Department of Theatre and Dance 8th Annual UC Davis Film Festival produced in association with UC Davis Technocultural Studies and co-sponsored by Film Studies and Art Studio. The Festival gives student filmmakers and videographers the opportunity to show their work and receive feedback from judges and peers. The Film Festival plays at the Davis Varsity Theatre Wednesday - Thursday, June 4 - 5, at 7pm.  All tickets are $5, available at Davis Varsity Theatre Box Office starting May 28. Full Story

UC Davis Symphony Orchestra Presents Free Community Concert (May, 20 2008)

The UC Davis Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of D. Kern Holoman, presents a free performance of Tchaikovsky’s “Romeo and Juliet,” Berlioz’s “Dream of a Witches’ Sabbath” from “Symphonie fantastique,” and UCD alumnus Ramteen Sazegari’s Overture on Thursday, June 5, at 7 p.m. in Jackson Hall of the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts. Witnessing Guantanamo: Amy Goodman Speaks with Former Detainees (May, 20 2008)

Via videoconference from Sudan, three former Guantanamo Bay detainees will talk for the first time to a U.S. audience about their prison experiences at a May 31 benefit for the Guantanamo Testimonials Project, a UC Davis-based effort to catalog accounts of prisoner abuse from print and broadcast sources around the world. UC Davis Department of Music Announces 2008–09 Celebratory Season (May, 19 2008)

The UC Davis Department of Music’s upcoming season celebrates multiple (and musical) milestones. Noteworthy UC Davis Centennial events include the UC Davis Symphony Orchestra’s 50th Anniversary Golden Jubilee Gala concert, featuring violinist Jorja Fleezanis (concertmaster of the Minnesota Orchestra) and the University Chorus, and the Music and Theatre & Dance Departments’ joint production of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “Oklahoma.” In addition, the University Chorus, Alumni Chorus, and UCDSO continue their annual collaboration with a bicentennial birthday performance of Mendelssohn’s “Elijah.” Full Story

Astronomers celebrate mirror casting for Large Synotic Survey Telescope (May, 16 2008)

The effort to build the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope passed a major milestone March 28, with the casting of the telescope’s main 8.4 meter mirror at the University of Arizona’s Steward Observatory Mirror Lab in Tucson. Tony Tyson, professor of physics at UC Davis, leads the consortium working to build the telescope, which will survey the entire visible night sky every three nights for 10 years. It will look for evidence of the mysterious dark matter and dark energy thought to make up most of the universe, as well as fast-changing objects such as asteroids.
