New Art, Books from UC Davis Graduates
Multimedia artist Paul Taylor (MFA, art, ’11) is in the exhibition Turbulence at the Chandra Cerrito Contemporary in Oakland. The group exhibition starts with an opening reception Dec. 2 from 6–8 p.m. and runs through Jan. 26.
Taylor is also one of two artists selected for the annual invitational show at Axis Gallery in Sacramento. The show runs Dec. 2–18 with an opening reception Dec. 10 from 6–9 p.m. Taylor’s work has been in exhibitions at the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco, ProArts in Oakland, and the David Brower Center in Berkeley. He has also exhibited his work in Australia, Greece, France and Bulgaria.

Jason Engelund (MFA, art, ’13) has work in “Boundless: A California Invitational” at the Museum of Photographic Arts in Pasadena through Jan. 29.
His Meta-Landscapes & Visual Ambient Drones series “encompasses both the psychological and physical landscapes, together making the meta-landscape. Through these images, I explore visual perception and its role in how we make meaning of memory and experience. I use photography as a metaphor for the mind’s camera eye and my process is abstraction.”
“The arts program at UC Davis gave me the dedicated time to go deep into my studio practice and push myself to take risks and create new artworks,” he said.
Lisa Marasso (MFA, art, ’05) is in a two-person exhibition at the American River College James Kaneko Gallery through Dec. 15.
Marasso’s work has been exhibited at New Mexico University, Johansson Projects in Oakland, and the San Jose Museum of Art. She teaches drawing at Sierra College and is a studio artist at Verge Center for the Arts.
She stated of her newest work: “Exploring imagery of decorative items through drawing, I am releasing the subjects, urging the forms to rotate, inverse and layer into abstractions. Allowing these ornaments to become an exercise in formal visual elements, I explore the relationship through glitzy craft store materials, areas left simple and unaddressed, and areas erased to be left silent.”
Jeff Mayry (MFA, art, ’16) is one of two artists in Gold Laundry of the Advent Arrival at Beatnik Studios in Sacramento. The exhibition opens with a reception Dec. 2 from 6–9 p.m. and will remain on display through Jan. 19. A midpoint reception will take place Jan. 6 from 6–9 p.m.
The debut novel True Religion by Joel Weinberg (B.A., English, ’75) has just been published by Chelsea Station Editions. The book is about an unexpected encounter with an otherworldly spirit at a holiday party that sends a gay journalist on a profound religious journey.
