Alumnus Composer William Cooper Appointed to New Post

William Davis Cooper

November 2017 — William David Cooper (Ph.D., music, ‘16) was recently appointed organist and choir director at St. James Episcopal Church in New London, Connecticut. Cooper has already racked up an impressive resumé as a composer.

"I find that composing and directing music at a church can go hand-in-hand pretty well," Cooper said. "Bach is probably the greatest example of a church musician/composer.”

Cooper has written three operas and music for orchestra, chamber ensembles, chorus, film, dance and electronics. His music has been performed by The New York Virtuoso Singers, Splinter Reeds, the Lysander Trio, ECCE Ensemble, West Edge Opera, the Lydian String Quartet and the Calder Quartet.

Earlier this year his ballet — written in commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation — premiered at St. Peter’s Church in New York City. Upcoming premieres include pieces written for the Berlin Philharmonic’s Scharoun Ensemble and for UC Davis music professor and violist Kurt Rohde.
