Applied Mathematics Major Honored for Excellence in STEM

Joel Barnett, 22, a junior in applied mathematics, recently received an Excellence in STEM Award for transfer students during the STEM Transfer Day award ceremony. The Excellence in STEM Awards are given to four current UC Davis students (one from each college) who have participated in a past STEM Transfer Day event, and who have the highest academic ranking in their pool. Each winner received a $250 scholarship for textbooks. Barnett, who transferred from Santa Rosa Community College, is a member of the University Honors Program and Math Club.

The UC Davis STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Transfer Day is an annual one-day program for Northern California Community College MESA students interested in transferring to UC Davis with the intention of working toward a degree in a STEM-related field. The MESA Schools Program assists California K-12 students in their pursuit of STEM-based college degrees. Support is offered in the form of advisement, competition, awards, college mentorship and career guidance.
